And so being young and dipped in folly, I fell in love with melancholy

'Chanel at Marienbad'

Inspired by the magnificent gardens of Versailles and the 1961 Alain Resnais hallucinatory film" L'année dernière à Marienbad ", Karl Lagerfeld created under the roof of the Grand Palais a striking setting. A fully-functioned fountain surrounded by a black and white garden which mirrored one of the film's most notable scenes. An eighty-piece orchestra accompanied the parade of models who walked in an almost schematic way.

The orchestra played Bjork, John Barry and the Verve's Bittersweet symphony

The famous snene of the film in which the two main characters have a panoramic view of the geometric garden, where some frozen figures cast long drammatic shadows, whereas the trees and the statues do not.

Chanel created a set that paid hommage to the seventieth century garden architect André Le Notre, who designed the perfectly symmetric gardens of Versailles.
